Population and Nationalities
While many ethnic minorities live in Ji’an, the major nationality is Han nationality. In the Tang dynasty,Lan Clan of She ethnic minority moved from Shanghang county of Fujian into Ji’an. However, they were called Jing People and degraded into stateless persons under the then feudal rule. During Yuan, Ming, Qing dynasties, Lei Clan of She ethnic minority moved from Fujian to Ji’an successively. After late 80s of 20th century,ethnic minorities of Ji’an have been increasing gradually because of business, immigration, employment, assignment and favorable ethnic policies.
According to the Fifth National Population Census,Ji’an has 37 ethnic minorities with a total population of 16,504, taking up 0.378% of the whole city’s population in 2000.The following are the general population information of ethnic minorities: there 9,841 She nationality people, 2,078 Miao nationality people, 1,056 Mongolian nationality people, 527 Hui nationality people, 421 Yi nationality people, 401 Manchu people, 357 Bouyei nationality people, 316 Zhuang nationality people, 186 Korean nationality people, 195 Qiang nationality people, 191 Tibetan nationality people, 165 Uyghur nationality people, 161 Tujia nationality people, 66 Dong nationality people, 59 Yao nationality people, 50 Bai nationality people, 27 Mulao nationality people, 25 Kelao nationality people, 17 Tu nationality people, 14 Daer nationality people, 8 the Jing nationality people, 7 the Tajik people, 6 the Drung people, 5 the Dai nationality people, 5 Xibe nationality people, 3 the Li nationality people, 3 the Pumi nationality people, 2 the Gaoshan nationality people, 2 the Hamin people, 2 the Ewenke people, 1 Kazak people, 1 Shui people, 1 Naxi people, 1 Jingpo people, 1 Luobo people and other 280 people with unidentified nationalities.
In feudal period,feudal rulers imposed ethnic discrimination policies upon ethnic minorities. Since the foundation of the People’s Republic of China, Communist Party and governments attach great importance to the development of ethnic minorities. Proper ethnic policies are taken root after longtime unremitting efforts to publicize Party’s ethnic policies, which form a sound situation that people of all nationalities are united together.
With the deepening of reform and open up, socialist commodity economy has seen great improvement in business activities of ethnic minorities. The life of ethnic minorities is greatly improved and they are walking on the path of co-prosperity with Han nationality.
